Nagata Shrine
Nagata Shrine in Kobe is an Engishiki myojin taisha enshrining Kotoshironushi at the entry of Settsu Province.
Description
Nagata Shrine (Nagata-jinja) stands in Nagata Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho of the Yatabe district of Settsu Province as "Nagata-jinja, Myojin Dai." Together with Ikuta Shrine (Chuo Ward) and Hirota Shrine (Nishinomiya), it is one of the three principal myojin taisha protecting the Settsu Province coastline. The main enshrined deity is Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) Land-of-Reeds transfer section and in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) Empress Jingu chronicle as the offspring of Okuninushi-no-Kami who agreed to the transfer of the Land of Reeds. According to the Nihon Shoki, Empress Jingu, on her way back from the Silla campaign, received an oracle to enshrine Kotoshironushi at this site. The shrine was elevated to kanpei chusha rank in the Meiji era and continues as a Jinja Honcho beppyo shrine.
