Description
Nakanotake Shrine in Shimonita, Gunma, stands on the eastern slope of Mount Myogi at the foot of Todoroki-iwa, which serves as the shrine's rock body. Its main deity is Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) as a son of Emperor Keiko, with Okuninushi and Sukunabikona enshrined together. The shrine's legendary founding is placed in the reign of Emperor Kinmei (539-571), and from the medieval period it served as a base for Myogi Shugendo practice. A 20-meter Daikoku statue was erected on the grounds in 2005. Annual festivals include the October reisai and the Daikoku festival on May 5.
