Description
Nangu-taisha in Tarui, Gifu, is the ichinomiya of former Mino Province, with Kanayamahiko no Mikoto, the deity of metal and mining, as its main enshrined deity. Kojiki (712 CE) records that Kanayamahiko was born from the vomit of Izanami when she became ill after bearing the fire deity Kagutsuchi. Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) lists the shrine as "Nakayama Kanayamahiko Jinja" of the Myojin-Taisha rank. The complex was destroyed in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 and rebuilt in 1642 by Tokugawa Iemitsu; eighteen of the resulting buildings are designated Important Cultural Properties. The May 5 reisai with its yabusame and Hebiyama rites is a defining festival of the province.
