Description

Emperor Jimmu (神武天皇) is the first emperor recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). His personal name is Kamuyamato-Iwarebiko-no-Mikoto, the great-grandson of the heavenly grandchild Ninigi-no-Mikoto. He is said to have set out from Hyuga and proceeded eastward to Yamato, where he acceded at the Kashihara Palace, standing at the origin of the imperial line. According to the Kojiki middle scroll, opening the Jimmu eastern expedition, he departed Takachiho in Hyuga with his elder brother Itsuse-no-Mikoto, passed through Usa, Tsukushi, and Kibi, landed at Kawachi, but was blocked at Kusaka Hill by Nagasunehiko, losing Itsuse. At Kumano, through Takakuraji, he received the sword Sajifutsu-no-Kami from Takemikazuchi, was guided by the Yatagarasu raven, and reached Yamato. The Nihon Shoki Jimmu section records, "On the first day of the first month of the Kanoto-Tori year, the Emperor acceded at the Kashihara Palace", with his accession year placed at 660 BCE. Principal shrine: Kashihara Jingu in Nara.
