Description
Nishino Shrine in Nishi Ward, Sapporo, stands at the southern foot of Mount Teine and serves as a tutelary shrine of western Sapporo. It was founded in 1885 by settlers from Ono in Fukui Prefecture, who invited the deities of their hometown Kasuga Shrine to the Hokkaido pioneer settlement. The shrine enshrines Toyotama-hime no Mikoto and Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto, the mother and father of Emperor Jimmu in the Kojiki (712 CE) sea-palace narrative, alongside Honda-wake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin, the Hachiman deity). This pairing of Hyuga mother-and-son deities in northern Hokkaido is unusual. The shrine became a village shrine (sonsha) in 1897 and was elevated to district shrine (gosha) in 1932. The current main hall in nagare-zukuri style was built in 1969.
