Description

Hondawake-no-Mikoto is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) Middle Volume and Nihon Shoki (720 CE) as the fifteenth emperor, Ojin. His mother is Empress Jingu (Okinaga-tarashi-hime-no-Mikoto) and his father is Emperor Chuai. He is a symbolic emperor of the Kofun period, identified with Hachiman in the medieval syncretic system and revered by warrior and common houses alike. As the central deity of the Hachiman triad (Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu and Hime-Okami) he is enshrined at Hachiman shrines across Japan. Kojiki Middle Volume Chuai and Ojin chapters record his birth on the return from the campaign across the strait, the suppression of the rebellion of Princes Kagosaka and Oshikuma, and his accession at Yamato. Nihon Shoki Empress Jingu and Ojin chapters carry the parallel narrative, with notes on the Ojin-period invitations of Wani and Achiki from Baekje as cultural transmissions. The Shoku Nihongi records the Usa Hachiman oracle in 769 CE and the role of Wake-no-Kiyomaro. His wives include Nakatsuhime-no-Mikoto and Miyanushi-Yakahime, and his children include Osazaki-no-Mikoto (Emperor Nintoku), Oyamamori-no-Miko and Uji-no-Wakiiratsuko. Usa Jingu in Oita, Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura are the chief seats.
