Description
Obihiro Shrine (帯廣神社) is a Shinto shrine in Higashi 3-jo Minami, Obihiro, Hokkaido, founded in 1910 as the guardian shrine of the Tokachi Plain pioneer settlement. The principal kami are the three pioneer deities Okunitama-no-Kami, Onamuchi-no-Kami (Okuninushi), and Sukunabikona-no-Kami, the same three-deity configuration as Hokkaido Jingu in Sapporo, characteristic of Meiji-era Hokkaido pioneer shrines. The shrine was ranked as a gosha in the Taisho era and later promoted to kensha, and is now a betsu-hyo shrine of the Shrine Association, serving as the regional guardian shrine of the Tokachi region. The mixed oak and Mongolian oak forest of the precincts is preserved as a native Hokkaido grove, and the annual festival of late July features mikoshi processions through Obihiro.
