Description
Okitsushima Shrine (隠津島神社) is a Shinto shrine in Kohata, Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) for Mutsu Province, Adachi District. The shrine takes Mount Kohata (666 m) as its sacred mountain, with the main hall on the summit and the foot shrine below. The principal kami are the Munakata Three Goddesses Ichikishima-hime-no-Mikoto, Tagori-hime-no-Mikoto, and Tagitsu-hime-no-Mikoto, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) as born from the oath-making between Amaterasu and Susanoo. The medieval Kohata banner festival, said to commemorate Minamoto no Yoritomo's victory prayer after the 1180 Oshu campaign, is held on the first Sunday of December and is registered as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukushima.
