Omiya Hikawa Shrine
Omiya Hikawa Shrine in Saitama, ichinomiya of former Musashi Province and head shrine of about 280 Hikawa shrines in the Kanto region.
Description
Omiya Hikawa Shrine in Saitama City is the ichinomiya of former Musashi Province and the head shrine of the roughly 280 Hikawa shrines of the Kanto region. The main deities are Susanoo no Mikoto, Inadahime no Mikoto and Onamuchi no Mikoto. Susanoo appears in Kojiki (712 CE) as the brother of Amaterasu in the Takamagahara cycle and slayer of Yamata no Orochi, after which he married Inadahime. The descent of Onamuchi (Okuninushi) is given in detail in the Kojiki middle volume. The shrine's name "Hikawa" derives from the "Hi no Kawa" of Izumo (modern Hii River), reflecting an Izumo-line migration tradition. Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) registers the shrine as a Myojin-Taisha of Adachi District. Designated as a chokusai-sha by Emperor Meiji in 1868, it was elevated to a national shrine of the highest rank in 1871. The August 1-2 reisai and the December 10 Daito-sai are principal rites.
