Description
Owari Okunitama Shrine (尾張大国霊神社) is a Shinto shrine in Konomiya, Inazawa, Aichi Prefecture, the soja (combined provincial shrine) of the former Owari Province, commonly called Konomiya from the place name. The principal kami is Owari-Okunitama-no-Kami, the kuni-tama deity of Owari Province, regarded as identical with Okuninushi of the Izumo tradition. The shrine is listed as a major shrine in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) for Owari Province, Nakashima District, and was patronised by the Tokugawa lords of Owari domain in the Edo period. The current main hall is an early-Edo structure designated an Important Cultural Property. The Naoi Shinji (Konomiya Naked Festival) on the 13th day of the first lunar month, in which thousands of near-naked men contest around the Naoinin, is an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Aichi.
