Description
Sezaki Sengen Shrine (Sezaki Sengen-jinja) stands in Sezaki, Soka City, Saitama Prefecture, on the alluvial plain of the Nakagawa River, as a local branch of the Mount Fuji-Asama belief network in the eastern Kanto plain. The main enshrined deity is Konohanano-Sakuyabime-no-Mikoto, the principal deity of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha in Shizuoka. According to the Kojiki (712 CE) section on the descent of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, Konohanano-Sakuyabime appears as the wife of Ninigi, and her childbirth-in-fire narrative connected her with veneration of Mount Fuji and protection during childbirth. The founding date is unclear, but the shrine is identified in early-modern local gazetteers as a parish shrine of the Sezaki settlement, integrated into the Edo-period Fuji-ko devotional networks. It was designated a village shrine in the Meiji era and continues as a Jinja Honcho registered shrine.
