Description

Konohanasakuya-hime (木花之佐久夜毘売命) is an earthly deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). The daughter of the mountain deity Oyamatsumi-no-Kami, she became the wife of the heavenly grandchild Ninigi-no-Mikoto and bore Hoderi (Umisachihiko), Hosuseri, and Hoori (Yamasachihiko). She is also venerated as the deity of Mount Fuji. According to the Kojiki upper scroll on the heavenly descent, Ninigi met Konohanasakuya-hime at Cape Kasasa and proposed marriage. Her father Oyamatsumi-no-Kami offered both daughters, but Ninigi kept only Konohanasakuya-hime, returning her sister Iwanaga-hime. The Kojiki attributes the shortened imperial lifespan to this. Father is Oyamatsumi; sister is Iwanaga-hime; her grandson is Emperor Jimmu in lineage. Principal shrine: Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha in Shizuoka.
