Description
Shirayama Hime Shrine in Hakusan, Ishikawa, stands above the Tedori River and is the head shrine of more than three thousand Hakusan shrines nationwide. It is the ichinomiya of former Kaga Province and takes Mount Hakusan (2,702 m) as its sacred mountain, with an okumiya on the summit of Gozengamine. The main deity is Shirayama Hime no Okami, identified with Kukurihime no Kami, recorded in Nihon Shoki (720 CE) as the goddess who mediated between Izanagi and Izanami at Yomotsu Hirasaka. Izanagi and Izanami are enshrined alongside. Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) registers the shrine as a Myojin-Taisha of Ishikawa-gun. Tradition holds that Taicho opened Mount Hakusan in 717 CE. The current main hall dates to an 1880 rebuilding. The May 6 grand festival and the July 18 Hakusan opening festival are principal rites.
