Description

Suika Tenmangu Shrine (Suika-tenmangu) stands in Ogimachi, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, and enshrines Sugawara no Michizane (845-903). According to shrine tradition, Emperor Daigo ordered the priest Joi to enshrine Michizane's spirit at this site in 923 CE, making it one of the oldest Tenmangu in Kyoto and a predecessor to Kitano Tenmangu, which was founded in 947 CE. The shrine name "Suika" (water and fire) reflects its distinctive role as a protector against flood and fire damage, a function that distinguishes it within the Kyoto Tenmangu network. The shrine continues the medieval goryo belief that linked Michizane's posthumous spirit to relief from natural disasters.
