Susa Shrine

Publicly verified

Susa Shrine in Izumo, Shimane, is the traditional site where Susanoo enshrined his own spirit at the end of his earthly career.

Description

Susa Shrine (Susa-jinja) stands in Sada-cho Susa, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, and is an Engishiki-listed shrine of the Iishi district of Izumo Province. It enshrines Susanoo-no-Mikoto together with Inadahime-no-Mikoto, Ashinazuchi-no-Mikoto, and Tenazuchi-no-Mikoto. According to the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki (733 CE), after completing his governance of the land Susanoo declared "Though this country is small, it is a fitting place" and enshrined his own spirit here, making Susa one of the central sites of Susanoo veneration. The shrine is also recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho for the Iishi district. The site retains an archaic ritual landscape including the "Seven Wonders of Susa," and the shrine was designated a kokuhei shosha in the Meiji era and a Jinja Honcho beppyo shrine after the war.
