Description
Toyouke Daijingu (formal name Toyouke-no-Okami-no-Miya) is the outer shrine (Geku) of Ise Jingu, located in Toyokawa-cho, Ise City, Mie Prefecture, separated by some 6 km from the inner shrine (Naiku). The main enshrined deity is Toyouke-no-Okami, identified in the Kojiki (712 CE) creation section as the grain and provisions deity born from the union of Wakumusubi-no-Kami. According to the Ise Nisho Daijingu Shinmei Hisho and the Ise Jingu engi, Toyouke-no-Okami was transferred from Tanba Province in 478 CE (or in some accounts the early seventh century) under imperial order to provide the meal offerings to Amaterasu-Omikami of the Naiku. The shrine practices the same Shikinen Sengu cyclical rebuilding as the Naiku, most recently in 2013. The shrine compound, with the Tadakamiyo, Tsuchinomiya, and Kazenomiya betsugu satellite shrines, is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) Jingi-ryo regulations.
