Description
Tsuganaki Shrine (Tsuganaki-jinja) stands in the Nara Prefecture portion of the ancient Yamato Province and is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho as one of the village shrines of the region. The shrine enshrines local kami associated with the surrounding settlement, continuing an archaic Yamato village-tutelary tradition. According to shrine tradition, the shrine functioned as a parish shrine of the local community from the Heian period and was integrated into the official jinmyocho ranking of the Engishiki. The shrine fell into reduced prominence through the medieval period but was maintained as a settlement shrine through the early modern era. It was designated a village shrine in the Meiji era and continues as a Jinja Honcho registered shrine maintained by the local parish community, which carries out seasonal agricultural rituals continuing the ancient Yamato village-tutelary tradition.
