Ame-no-Hoakari-no-Mikoto

Ame-no-Hoakari-no-Mikoto is a heavenly deity recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). In Kojiki, upper volume, opening of the Tenson Korin section, he is listed together with Hiko-Ho-no-Ninigi-no-Mikoto as a son of Ame-no-Oshihomimi and Takuhata-Chiji-hime, with Ninigi taking the role of descent. Nihon Shoki (Jindai-ge, ninth-segment alternate texts) preserves multiple parallel traditions: in some, Ame-no-Hoakari descends to the Torimi-Shiraniwa peak in Yamato; in others, he descends to Tanba Province, reflecting strong connections with regional clan genealogies. Sendai Kuji Hongi further identifies him with Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto under the composite name Amateru-Kuniteru-Hiko-Ame-no-Hoakari-Kushitama-Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto. His father is Ame-no-Oshihomimi, mother Takuhata-Chiji-hime; his younger brother is Ninigi. Among his sons are Ama-no-Kaguyama-no-Mikoto (ancestor of the Owari-no-Muraji) and (per the Nigihayahi identification) Umashimaji-no-Mikoto (ancestor of the Mononobe). Shinsen Shojiroku (815 CE) records many corresponding clans. He is enshrined at Masumida Shrine in Ichinomiya, Aichi (ichinomiya of Owari Province); Kono Shrine in Miyazu, Kyoto (ichinomiya of Tango Province, whose Amabe clan genealogy is a National Treasure); and Yahiko Shrine in Niigata (ichinomiya of Echigo Province, one tradition).
