Description

Hinokakabiko-no-Kami is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume in the deity-making passage as one of the names of the fire deity Hinokagutsuchi-no-Kami. The text reads, "She bore the deity of fire, named Hi-no-Yagihayao-no-Kami, also called Hinokakabiko-no-Kami, also called Hi-no-Kagutsuchi-no-Kami, and from this birth her chasm was burned, and she lay sick." The character kaka indicates radiant burning, naming the aspect of fire that gives off light. His father is Izanagi-no-Kami, his mother is Izanami-no-Kami, and the three names Hi-no-Yagihayao, Hinokakabiko and Hi-no-Kagutsuchi refer to the same deity in his three aspects. After his death by Izanagi's sword, the deities Hihayahi-no-Kami, Mikahayahi-no-Kami, Takemikazuchi-no-O-no-Kami and the water deities Kura-Okami-no-Kami and Kura-Mitsuha-no-Kami arose from the sword. He is remembered as an alternate name within the cult of Hi-no-Kagutsuchi at Akiba Jinja in Hamamatsu and Atago Jinja in Kyoto.
