Description
Hinoyagihayao-no-Kami is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume in the deity-making passage as one of the names of the fire deity Hinokagutsuchi-no-Kami. The text reads, "She bore the deity of fire, named Hi-no-Yagihayao-no-Kami, also called Hinokakabiko-no-Kami, also called Hi-no-Kagutsuchi-no-Kami." This birth at the close of the deity-making caused the death of his mother Izanami-no-Mikoto. The three names point to three aspects of the same deity, swiftness, radiance and combustion. After his death by Izanagi's sword, the deities Hihayahi-no-Kami, Mikahayahi-no-Kami, Takemikazuchi-no-O-no-Kami and the water deities Kura-Okami-no-Kami and Kura-Mitsuha-no-Kami arose from the sword. He is remembered as the older form of the name within the fire-prevention cult of Akiba Jinja in Hamamatsu and Atago Jinja in Kyoto, preserved in liturgy and genealogical records.
