Description
Ishikoridome-no-Mikoto is a heavenly deity recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE), enshrined as the ancestral deity of the mirror-making craft. Kojiki, upper volume, Ame-no-Iwato section, records that to draw Amaterasu Omikami from the rock cave, on Omoikane-no-Kami's instruction, 'taking iron from Mount Kanayama of Heaven, calling on the smith Amatsumara, and entrusting Ishikoridome-no-Mikoto with the making of the mirror' produced the Yata-no-Kagami mirror. In the subsequent Tenson Korin section, she attends Ninigi-no-Mikoto's descent as one of the Five Itsutomo-no-O. Shinsen Shojiroku (815 CE) records her as the ancestral deity of the Kagami-tsukuri-no-Muraji. Together with Ame-no-Koyane, Futodama, Ame-no-Uzume, and Tamanooya-no-Mikoto, she descends with Ninigi. She has close ties to the Imbe and Kagami-tsukuri-be of the ancient court. Her principal place of veneration is Kagamitsukuri-Niimasu-Amateru-Mitama Shrine in Tawaramoto, Shiki, Nara, the central shrine of the three Kagami-tsukuri shrines of Shikishimo district in Yamato, listed in Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) as a Myojin-Taisha. Through her role in the Tenson Korin she is also connected with Hinokuma Jingu and Kunikakasu Jingu in Wakayama, the ichinomiya of Kii Province.
