Description

Hoori-no-Mikoto is a heavenly deity recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). Known by the common name Yamasachihiko, he is the child of Ninigi-no-Mikoto and Konohanasakuya-Hime-no-Mikoto. He is the protagonist of the Yamasachihiko-Umisachihiko episode in which he visits the sea-deity palace, and is the grandfather of Emperor Jimmu. In Kojiki Upper Volume Yamasachihiko-Umisachihiko passage, after losing the fishhook of his elder brother Hoderi-no-Mikoto (Umisachihiko), Hoori is guided by Shiotsuchi-no-Kami to the palace of the sea deity Watatsumi-no-Kami. He weds Toyotama-Hime-no-Mikoto and stays three years, then recovers the fishhook and receives the tide-rising and tide-falling jewels with which he subdues his brother upon returning to the land. Nihon Shoki Jindai lower chapter ten variant gives the parallel narrative under the name Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto. His father is Ninigi-no-Mikoto, his mother is Konohanasakuya-Hime, and his brothers are Hoderi-no-Mikoto and Hosuseri-no-Mikoto. His consort is Toyotama-Hime-no-Mikoto and his child is Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, whose youngest son becomes Emperor Jimmu. He is enshrined at Kagoshima Jingu in Kirishima, Aoshima Jinja and Kirishima Jingu.
