Description
Sokotsutsunoo-no-Mikoto (底箇之男命, also read Sokotsutsu-no-O-no-Mikoto) is a heavenly deity recorded in the purification chapter of the Kojiki (712 CE). He is the senior of the Sumiyoshi Sanjin, also written as Sokotsutsu-no-O-no-Mikoto or Sokotsutsu-no-O-no-Kami. He is the first deity to emerge in the water-bottom during Izanagi's purification, and he serves as the senior of the Sumiyoshi shrine deities, governing maritime traffic and sea-route safety. According to the Kojiki upper scroll on purification, "when he washed at the water-bottom, the deities born were Sokotsuwatatsumi-no-Kami; next Sokotsutsu-no-O-no-Mikoto". The Nihon Shoki (720 CE) Empress Jingu Sankan tradition records the deity guarding the imperial ship. Father is Izanagi. Sibling deities: Nakatsutsu-no-O-no-Mikoto, Uwatsutsu-no-O-no-Mikoto. Principal shrines: Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka, Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata.
