Description

Sumiyoshi Shrine (Sumiyoshi-jinja) stands in Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is the ichinomiya of Nagato Province. According to the Nihon Shoki (720 CE), in the first year of Empress Jingu's regency the rough spirits (aramitama) of the Sumiyoshi three deities were enshrined at Yamada village in Anato (Nagato) on the way back from the Silla campaign, with the gentle spirits later enshrined at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka. The shrine is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho of the Toyora district as "Sumiyoshi-ni-imasu-Aramitama-jinja sanza" with myojin taisha status. The main hall, built in 1370 by Ouchi Hiroyo in a unique nine-bay nagare-zukuri style, is designated a National Treasure, and the worship hall built in 1539 by Ouchi Yoshitaka is an Important Cultural Property.
