Takitsuhime-no-Mikoto is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) as one of the Munakata three goddesses, sent down to guard the sea route toward the Korean peninsula.
Description
Takitsuhime-no-Mikoto is recorded in the oath-taking passage of Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume, where Amaterasu-Omikami chews and breathes out the ten-grasp sword of Takehaya-Susanoo-no-Mikoto into mist, from which the three goddesses Takiribime-no-Mikoto, Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto and Takitsuhime-no-Mikoto arise. Nihon Shoki (720 CE) Jindai chapter six variant gives the corresponding form Tagitsuhime and records that the three were sent down to the Kaihoku Dochu, the sea route toward the Korean peninsula, to assist the descendants of the heavenly grandson. Her father by oath is Takehaya-Susanoo-no-Mikoto, and her sisters are Takiribime and Ichikishimahime; together they are called the Munakata Sanjoshin. From later ages Ichikishimahime fused with the Buddhist Benzaiten, and the three were widely revered as goddesses of sea and water. She is enshrined at Munakata Taisha Nakatsumiya on Oshima, Itsukushima Jinja and Enoshima Jinja.
