Description
Utou Shrine (善知鳥神社) is a Shinto shrine in Yasukata, Aomori, Aomori Prefecture, traditionally regarded as the birthplace of the city of Aomori and the guardian shrine of its central district. The shrine name Utou is the former name of Aomori village, recorded as the setting of the Noh play Utou attributed to Zeami. The enshrined kami are the Munakata Three Goddesses Tagiri-hime-no-Mikoto, Ichikishima-hime-no-Mikoto, and Tagitsu-hime-no-Mikoto, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) as born from the oath-making between Amaterasu and Susanoo. According to shrine tradition, the shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Ingyo and restored in 708 CE, and it was rebuilt in 1624 by Tsugaru Nobuhira at the founding of Aomori port.
