Description
Toyoukebime-no-Kami appears in the deity-making passage of Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume, recorded as the child of Wakumusubi-no-Kami: "When the divine birth was completed there came Wakumusubi-no-Kami, and the child of this deity is called Toyoukebime-no-Kami." She is placed at the close of the lineage of deities that arose around the death of Izanami after the birth of Kagutsuchi, and assumes the function of grain production and renewal. The later Toyuke-no-Miya Gishikicho of 804 CE records the tradition of her transfer to Yamada in Ise in the twenty-second year of Emperor Yuryaku, foundational for Geku ritual. As food-deity she shares character with Ukanomitama-no-Kami, Ogetsuhime-no-Kami and Ukemochi-no-Kami of Nihon Shoki. She is enshrined at Ise Geku, with origin traditions at Hinumanai Jinja in Kyotango and Manai Jinja in Miyazu; the twenty-year sengu is observed in parallel with the Naiku.
