Description

Wakumusuhi-no-Kami is a generative deity recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE), upper scroll, in the kami-umi (deity-bearing) passage. The text states that the deity arises from the urine of Izanami-no-Mikoto as she is dying after giving birth to the fire deity Kagutsuchi-no-Kami, and that the child of Wakumusuhi is Toyouke-hime-no-Kami, the enshrined deity of the Outer Shrine of Ise Jingu. The Nihon Shoki (720 CE) preserves a parallel account. The name carries the sense of "young, fresh generation," and the deity stands as the ancestral figure of the lineage of grain and food deities. While dedicated shrines listed in the Engishiki (927 CE) are limited, the deity is remembered as the parent of Toyouke at the Outer Shrine of Ise Jingu and at Hinumanai-jinja (Kyotango, Kyoto), part of the moto-Ise tradition.
