Description

Eboshiyama Hachimangu (烏帽子山八幡宮) is a Shinto shrine on the summit of Mount Eboshi (about 200 m) above Akayu in Nan'yo, Yamagata Prefecture. According to shrine tradition, the shrine was founded in 1085 when Minamoto no Yoshiie (1039-1106) encamped on Mount Eboshi during the Later Three Years' War and invoked the spirit of Iwashimizu Hachimangu. The principal kami are the Hachiman triad of Emperor Ojin (Homutawake-no-Mikoto), Empress Jingu (Okinagatarashi-hime), and Hime-Okami, deriving from Usa Jingu in Buzen Province. The granite torii of 1903, a one-piece stone gate of national scale, is a designated tangible cultural property of Yamagata, and the surrounding precincts form a famous cherry-blossom park.
