Description

Fukuyama Hachimangu in Kita-Yoshizu-cho, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, stands north of Fukuyama Castle. It was founded in 1661 by the second Fukuyama lord Mizuno Katsutoshi, consolidating two pre-existing Hachiman shrines — the eastern Nobuhiro Hachimangu and the western Nogami Hachimangu — into a single site, preserving them as a distinctive twin-shrine layout (east and west honden). The main deities are the Hachiman triad of Homutawake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin), Okinaga Tarashi-hime no Mikoto (Empress Jingu) and Hime-gami, enshrined in each of the two honden. The Hachiman cult derives from Usa Jingu in Oita and spread nationally through Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto. Through the Mizuno, Matsudaira and Abe domains the shrine served as the tutelary of the Fukuyama castle town. It was registered as a prefectural shrine in 1885. The two honden and oratories are designated Fukuyama City cultural properties.
