Description
Hayatani Shrine in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima, stands on hills overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, with views toward Miyajima. Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) identifies the shrine as "Hayatani Jinja, Myojin-Taisha" of Saeki District in Aki Province, alongside Itsukushima Shrine as one of the two great Engishiki Taisha of the province. The main deity is Aki Hayatama-o no Mikoto, the ancestral deity of the Aki kuni no miyatsuko, recorded in Nihon Shoki (720 CE) as appointed governor of Aki under Emperor Seimu. Through the medieval period it served as the general tutelary shrine of Aki and received the patronage of the Mori and Asano clans. It was registered as a national shrine of middle rank in 1871. The shrine has been venerated for traffic safety since the modern period. The October 7-8 reisai with mikoshi procession is the principal rite.
