Description

Hida Ichinomiya Minashi Shrine in Takayama, Gifu, stands at the northern foot of Mount Kurai, geographically central to the Hida range. Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) registers it as "Minashi Jinja" of Ono District in Hida Province. It is the ichinomiya of former Hida and the general tutelary of the Hida mountain region. The site is on the upper Miyagawa River, where underground water emerges, giving the shrine its name. Fourteen deities are enshrined collectively as Mitoshi no Okami, also called Minashi no Okami. Mitoshi appears in Kojiki (712 CE) as the son of Otoshigami and Kayohime, a deity of grain. Other deities enshrined include Onamuchi, Mihotsu-hime and Emperor Ojin. The shrine received patronage from the Anekoji shugo in the medieval period and from the Kanamori clan and shogunate magistrates in the Edo period. The May 2-5 grand festival and its Tokeiraku performance is a Gifu prefectural Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
