Description
Himure Hachimangu in Omihachiman, Shiga, stands at the southern foot of Mount Hachiman near the historic Omihachiman canal district. It enshrines the three Hachiman deities — Homutawake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin), Okinaga Tarashi-hime no Mikoto (Empress Jingu) and Hime-gami — descending from Usa Jingu in Oita. Shrine tradition places early devotion in the reign of Emperor Seimu and records a refounding under Toyotomi Hidetsugu in 1568, when he laid out the castle town of Omihachiman. Through the Edo period it was the tutelary shrine of the Omi merchant community. It was registered as a district shrine (gosha) in 1871 and later as a prefectural shrine. Both the March Sagicho festival and the April Hachiman festival are designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties.
