Description
Hiraoka Shrine in Higashi-Osaka, Osaka, is the ichinomiya of former Kawachi Province and an Engishiki Myojin-Taisha. The shrine's ancestral deities of the Nakatomi (later Fujiwara) clan were transferred to Kasuga Taisha in Nara in 768 CE, earning Hiraoka the title "Moto-Kasuga." The main deities are Ame no Koyane no Mikoto and Hime-mi-kami, with Futsunushi and Takemikazuchi as associated deities — the same four deities later installed at Kasuga. Kojiki (712 CE) records Ame no Koyane intoning the norito before the rock cave of heaven. Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) lists "Hiraoka Jinja, four seats, Myojin-Taisha" of Kawachi District. Tradition places the founding in the reign of Emperor Jimmu, with a relocation from the original Kamitsudake summit site in 650 CE. It was raised to the rank of national shrine in the Meiji period. The February gruel-divination rite and the October Akigo-sai are principal observances.
