In 30 seconds
Tsugaru castle-town tutelary shrine in Aomori, with Momoyama main hall and karamon designated Important Cultural Properties.
Description
Hirosaki Hachimangu in Hirosaki, Aomori, stands northeast of Hirosaki Castle as the guardian shrine of the castle town's demon gate (kimon). Its main hall and karamon gate are Important Cultural Properties. The main deities are the Hachiman triad descending from Usa: Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu and Hime-gami; Amaterasu Omikami is enshrined alongside. Kojiki (712 CE) records Emperor Ojin in the Empress Jingu narrative. Tradition attributes an early Heian-era founding to Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in 806-810, but the present site was established in 1612 by the second domain lord Tsugaru Nobuhira, who transferred the shrine here as the general tutelary of Hirosaki castle town. The main hall and karamon date from that 1612 Momoyama-style construction. The August 1 reisai with its dashi yatai procession is a designated Aomori prefectural intangible folk cultural property.
