Description

Hojozu Hachimangu in Imizu, Toyama, stands above Shinminato fishing harbor on Toyama Bay, overlooking Nago Bay. The site appears in Otomo no Yakamochi's poem in Man'yoshu Book 18 (no. 4037) about the Nago shore. The main deities are the Hachiman triad of Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, Hime-gami, with Emperor Nintoku as a fourth associated deity. Kojiki (712 CE) records Emperor Ojin in the Empress Jingu narrative. Shrine tradition credits the Echu provincial governor Otomo no Yakamochi (the Man'yoshu compiler) with transferring the deity from Usa Hachiman to the Nago shore in 746 CE — an early case of Hachiman devotion in Echu. The site became central to the Muromachi-era "Hojozu Bakufu" of Ashikaga Yoshiki in 1493 and received Kanazawa Maeda patronage in the Edo period. It was registered as a prefectural shrine in the Meiji period. The October Shinminato Hikiyama festival, in which thirteen ornate floats traverse the town, is a designated Toyama prefectural intangible folk cultural property.
