Kagami Shrine
Kagami Shrine in Karatsu, Saga is a Matsuura-district shrine associated with Empress Jingu's Korean campaign and the Manyoshu poem of Matsura Sayohime.
Description
Kagami Shrine (鏡神社) is a Shinto shrine in Kagami, Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, on the northern foot of Mount Kagami above Karatsu Bay. The shrine site is near the place of Matsura Sayohime, the maiden of the waving sash, sung by Yamanoue no Okura in the Manyoshu, Book 5. The principal kami are Okinagatarashi-hime-no-Mikoto (Empress Jingu) and Fujiwara no Hirotsugu (?-740). According to the Nihon Shoki (720 CE), Empress Jingu was associated with the Matsura region during her campaign against the three Korean kingdoms, and according to shrine tradition she dedicated a mirror at this place. The second-grade hall was founded in 755 CE to console the spirit of Fujiwara no Hirotsugu, who died in his 740 rebellion, making the shrine a regional centre of the goryo-shin cult.
