Description

Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine (commonly Kamigamo Shrine), located in Kita Ward, Kyoto, is one of the ichinomiya of Yamashiro Province and forms a pair with Kamo-mioya Shrine (Shimogamo). It is a component of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage Site registered in 1994. The principal deity is Kamo-wakeikazuchi-no-Okami; according to a Yamashiro no Kuni Fudoki fragment, Tamayori-hime conceived the deity after a vermilion-painted arrow flowed down the Semi stream. Records of shrine construction in 677 appear in Tenmu Tenno's reign, and it is recorded in the Engishiki Jinmyocho as a Myojin Taisha. The honden is a National Treasure, and a shikinen sengu is held every 21 years. The Aoi Matsuri held on May 15 is one of the three great festivals of Kyoto.
