Description
Kashihara Jingu (橿原神宮) is a Shinto shrine in Kume-cho, Kashihara, Nara Prefecture, founded in 1890 to enshrine Emperor Jimmu at the traditional site of his enthronement at the southeastern foot of Mount Unebi. The principal kami are Kamuyamato-Iwarebiko-no-Mikoto (Emperor Jimmu) and his consort Himetatara-Isuzu-hime-no-Mikoto, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and the Nihon Shoki (720 CE) as the first emperor and his consort, daughter of Kotoshironushi-no-Kami. The shrine site is identified with the "land of Kashihara to the southeast of Mount Unebi" of the Jimmu chapter of the Nihon Shoki. The main hall, the Kashikodokoro and Shinka-den of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, was relocated and bestowed as the main hall by Emperor Meiji at the founding in 1890; the shrine was ranked as a national shrine of the highest grade and underwent a major expansion in 1940 for the 2,600th anniversary of the imperial line.
