Description

Omiya Hachimangu (大宮八幡宮) is a Shinto shrine in Honmachi, Miki, Hyogo Prefecture, the medieval guardian shrine of the Miki region in eastern Harima Province. The principal kami are the Hachiman triad of Emperor Ojin (Homutawake-no-Mikoto), Empress Jingu (Okinagatarashi-hime), and Tamayori-hime-no-Mikoto, deriving from Usa Jingu of the Hachiman cult. According to shrine tradition, the shrine was established in 1180 when Minamoto no Yoritomo offered a victory prayer here during the Genpei War. The shrine became the prayer shrine of the Bessho clan of Miki Castle and was destroyed during the Siege of Miki (1578-1580), then rebuilt under the Himeji domain in the Edo period, and ranked as a prefectural shrine in the Meiji era.
