Description
Suyama Shrine (Suyama-jinja, also read Tozan-jinja) stands in Otaru, Arita-cho, Nishimatsuura District, Saga Prefecture, in the heart of the Arita porcelain district. The main enshrined deity is Emperor Ojin, with the Korean potter Ri Sampei (d. 1655), traditionally regarded as the founder of Arita porcelain, and the Saga domain founder Nabeshima Naoshige (1538-1618) as co-enshrined deities. According to shrine tradition, it was founded in 1658 by the Nabeshima domain's Arita Sarayama deputy office and the potter community as a Hachiman branch shrine for the protection of the ceramics industry, drawing on the lineage of Usa Jingu in Buzen Province. A porcelain torii was donated by potters in 1856 and remains in the precincts as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, making the shrine unique among Japanese shrines for its porcelain ritual structures.
