Description
Tamatsushima Shrine (Tamatsushima-jinja) stands in Wakanoura, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, on the Wakanoura inlet. The main enshrined deity is Sotori-hime-no-Mikoto, a princess of Emperor Ingyo recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and the Nihon Shoki (720 CE), traditionally venerated as one of the three patron deities of waka poetry. The shrine is recorded as a "fitting place for poetry" in the Manyoshu (8th century), which preserves poems by Yamabe no Akahito and Ki no Tsurayuki composed at Wakanoura. According to shrine tradition, Emperor Shomu visited in 724 CE and ordered the establishment of a sanctuary. From the Heian period the shrine was venerated by poets as the muse of waka and was offered prayers by successive imperial courts and aristocratic poetic circles. It is recorded in the Engishiki (927 CE) jinmyocho of the Naga district of Kii Province. The shrine was elevated to kensha rank in the Meiji era.
