Description
Yaegaki Shrine (Yaegaki-jinja) stands in Sakusa-cho, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. Formerly called Sakusa-jinja, it is recorded in the Izumo Fudoki (733 CE) and listed in Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) as one of the six shrines of Ou (Ou-rokusha). The principal deities are Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Inada-hime-no-Mikoto (Kushinada-hime), with Onamuchi-no-Mikoto and Aohata-Sakusahiko-no-Mikoto as auxiliary deities. According to Kojiki (712 CE), after slaying Yamata-no-Orochi, Susanoo settled in Suga and composed the poem 'Yakumo tatsu Izumo yaegaki,' from which the shrine name derives. The Kagami-no-Ike pond in the inner precinct is associated with Kushinada-hime taking shelter from the serpent. The shrine was ranked as a prefectural shrine (kensha) in the Meiji era.
