Description

Oyamatsumi-no-Kami (大山津見神) is an earthly deity (kunitsukami) recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and Nihon Shoki (720 CE). Born during the deity-birth phase by Izanagi and Izanami, he is the comprehensive mountain deity, father of Konohana-no-Sakuya-bime and Iwanaga-hime. After the heavenly descent, he offered both daughters to Ninigi-no-Mikoto, but Ninigi returned Iwanaga-hime, an event the source attributes to the limited lifespan of the imperial line. Oyamayama Shrine in Ehime (Iyo Province ichinomiya) serves as the head shrine of all mountain shrines nationwide; Mishima Taisha in Shizuoka and Umenomiya Taisha in Kyoto also enshrine him. Many swords and armor housed at Oyamazumi Shrine are designated National Treasures.
