Description
Oyamazumi Shrine (大山祇神社) is a Shinto shrine on the island of Omishima in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, the first-ranked shrine of the former Iyo Province. The principal kami is Oyamazumi-no-Kami, recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) as the son of Izanagi and Izanami and the father of Konohanasakuya-hime and Iwanaga-hime, the father-in-law of Ninigi-no-Mikoto. According to an extract of the lost Iyo no Kuni Fudoki preserved in later quotations, the shrine was venerated as the "supreme guardian of Japan" from antiquity, and shrine tradition attributes its consecration to Ochi-no-Mikoto before Emperor Jimmu's eastern expedition. The shrine is listed as a Myojin-Taisha in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) and holds the largest collection of National Treasure and Important Cultural Property arms and armour in Japan, dedicated by warriors from the Genpei, Nanboku-cho, and Sengoku periods.
