Takiribime-no-Mikoto is recorded in Kojiki (712 CE) as the eldest Munakata goddess, enshrined at Okitsumiya on Okinoshima and mother of Okuninushi's Izumo children.
Description
Takiribime-no-Mikoto is recorded in the oath-taking passage of Kojiki (712 CE) Upper Volume as the first deity to come into being from the mist that Amaterasu-Omikami breathed out after chewing the ten-grasp sword of Takehaya-Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The text reads, "The first deity born was named Takiribime-no-Mikoto, also called Okitsushimahime-no-Mikoto," giving her an alternate name tied to the Okitsumiya shrine. Nihon Shoki (720 CE) Jindai chapter six variant gives the corresponding form Tagorihime. Her father by oath is Takehaya-Susanoo, and her sisters are Ichikishimahime and Takitsuhime, the three together called the Munakata Sanjoshin. She is consort of Okuninushi-no-Kami, and her children are Ajisukitakahikone-no-Kami and Shitateruhime-no-Mikoto, linking the Izumo line to the heavenly deities. She is enshrined at Munakata Taisha Okitsumiya on Okinoshima, inscribed in 2017 on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and at the Hetsumiya in Munakata.
