A Nagoya Hachiman shrine with traditions of prayer by Tokugawa Ieyasu before Okehazama in 1560.

Description

Gokiso Hachimangu, located in Hachiman-cho, Showa Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, is one of the Hachiman shrines of the Owari region with foundations attributed by tradition to the late Heian period. The principal deities are Hondawake-no-Mikoto (Ojin Tenno), Okinagatarashihime-no-Mikoto (Empress Jingu), and Himegami, the three Hachiman deities. The Hachiman cult radiated nationally from Usa Jingu in Oita and from Iwashimizu Hachimangu in Kyoto. This shrine stands adjacent to the cult area of Atsuta Jingu, the Owari ichinomiya enshrining the Kusanagi sword. Shrine tradition relates that Tokugawa Ieyasu offered prayers for victory before and after the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, leading to early-modern patronage by the Tokugawa main line and the Owari domain. It was assigned the village shrine rank in 1873. The honden and haiden are early-modern through modern rebuildings. The October annual rite is observed as the autumn festival of the Gokiso district.
