Description
Hakozaki-gu in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka, faces Hakata Bay and is the ichinomiya of former Chikuzen Province. It is counted with Usa Jingu and Iwashimizu Hachimangu as one of the three great Hachiman shrines of Japan. The main deity is Emperor Ojin, with Empress Jingu and Tamayori-hime enshrined alongside as the Hachiman triad. Shrine tradition records that in 921 CE Emperor Daigo ordered the deity transferred from Daibu-gu (modern-day Umi Hachimangu) to the present site, with the main hall completed in 923. Engishiki Jinmyocho (927 CE) registers the shrine as "Hachiman Daibosatsu Hakozaki-gu" of Naka District. During the Mongol invasions of 1274 and 1281 the shrine was venerated for the defense of the realm, and the inscription "Tekikoku Kofuku" attributed to Emperor Kameyama was raised here. The main hall, oratory, romon and first torii are Important Cultural Properties. The September Hojoya is one of the three great festivals of Hakata.
