Description
Hikoshima Hachimangu in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, stands on Hikoshima island commanding views across the Kanmon Strait to the port of Moji in Kitakyushu. The main deities are the Hachiman triad descending from Usa: Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu and Hime-gami. Kojiki (712 CE) records Emperor Ojin in the Empress Jingu narrative as the imperial son born on her return from the conquest of Silla. The shrine's setting on the strait connects it ritually with Kashii-gu in Fukuoka and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Shimonoseki, also linked with the Empress Jingu tradition. Shrine tradition records a 1166-1169 founding by transferring the deity from Usa Hachiman. The shrine's seaside location made it a guardian for crossings of the strait, where the decisive 1185 sea battle of Dan-no-ura was fought. It was registered as a prefectural shrine in the Meiji period. The Sai-nobori rite at the October reisai is a Yamaguchi prefectural intangible folk cultural property.
