Description
Izusan Shrine (伊豆山神社) is a Shinto shrine on the slopes of Mount Izu in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, the second-ranked shrine of the former Izu Province. The principal kami are collectively called Izusan-no-Kami, identified with Homusubi-no-Mikoto, Izanagi-no-Mikoto, and Izanami-no-Mikoto recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE). According to the medieval Soto-san Engi, the shrine originated when the ascetic Matsuba Sennin received the revelation of Soto Gongen during the reign of Emperor Nintoku. The Azuma Kagami records that Minamoto no Yoritomo venerated the shrine during his exile in Izu, anchoring it as a centre of eastern warrior devotion.
